Value Investing (VI)

noun The sacred American art of buying something for what it’s truly worth instead of what the hype machine says it’s worth... until you realize the “value” was just expensive office space that doesn’t scale and your OpEx is eating the company alive like unlimited breadsticks at Olive Garden.

Classic Example: WeWork Investors poured billions into WeWork thinking they were backing the “Uber of office space” — a sleek, tech-disrupting, community-driven revolution. Turns out it was just really expensive real estate with ping-pong tables, free kombucha, and a cult-like CEO. The business model never scaled because physical desks and long-term leases don’t magically become software margins. Massive valuation → spectacular flameout. Classic VI gone wrong: bought the story, ignored the fixed costs.

Usage examples:

  • “I thought I was value investing in that startup, but it was just WeWork 2.0 — fancy desks and burning cash.”
  • “His portfolio is pure VI: solid dividends and zero WeWork-style hype.”
  • “Bro, stop calling it a value play. That’s just another cheesy WeWork special.”
