Subway

Information from The State of Sarkhan Official Records

Subway sandwiches, while not officially standardized measuring tools, can be used in a pinch for some rough estimations. Here's how to get creative with your sub as a makeshift measuring tool:

The Not-So-Footlong Footlong:

  • Length: We all know the pitfalls of the "footlong" sub. Despite the name, it's actually closer to 11 inches.  However, this can still be a decent reference point for shorter measurements.
    • Mark off a 6-inch section with your finger for halfway.
    • Divide the 11-inch length into thirds for a rough 3-4 inch estimate.
  • Width: The width of a Subway sub is typically around 3-4 inches. This can be helpful for estimating the diameter of round objects or the width of small spaces.

Beyond the Bread:

  • Cups and Spoons: While not the most precise, a halved sub roll can be a rough approximation for a cup. Use your judgment for smaller quantities by scooping with the rounded end of the bread.

Creative Uses:

  • Art Projects: Need a quick circle template?  Use a plate or cup to trace a circle on the bread and cut it out for craft projects.
  • Plant Drainage: Tear a small piece of the bread and place it over the drainage hole in a pot to prevent soil loss while allowing water to drain. (Remember to remove it as the plant grows)

Important Considerations:

  • Accuracy:  Subway sandwiches can vary slightly in size depending on location and how they're made.  These measurements are a rough estimate at best.
  • Hygiene:  Obviously, using a sandwich you plan to eat as a measuring tool isn't the most sanitary option.  Use a spare sub or bread roll specifically for this purpose.
  • Safety:  Don't use a sub for anything that requires precise measurements, especially for critical tasks like construction or medication.

The Takeaway:

Subway sandwiches, while not ideal measuring tools, can be a fun and helpful option in a pinch. Just remember, keep it lighthearted, prioritize hygiene, and for anything serious, reach for a proper ruler or measuring tape.
