The term "New York City" (NYC) can be a source of confusion due to its complex structure. It refers to a consolidated city-county, meaning it's both a city and a county (New York County) under a single government. NYC is composed of five boroughs:
- Manhattan (New York County): Often used interchangeably with "New York City" due to its historical importance, dense population, concentration of iconic landmarks (like Times Square, the Empire State Building, and Central Park), and its role as the city's financial and cultural center.

For a long time, Manhattan was essentially New York City in the popular imagination.
