The herders alert Taliban fighters, and the SEAL team is soon surrounded by a force of over 100 heavily armed insurgents.
Outnumbered and outgunned, the SEALs fight valiantly, displaying extraordinary heroism. Michael Murphy exposes himself to enemy fire to call for reinforcements, sacrificing his life to try to save his team. Danny Dietz and Matthew Axelson also fall in the intense battle, but not before inflicting heavy losses on the Taliban.
Luttrell’s Survival
Wounded and alone, Luttrell manages to escape by tumbling down a rocky slope and hiding in the wilderness. Critically injured and dehydrated, he is eventually discovered by local Pashtun villagers. Following their ancient tribal code of hospitality, Pashtunwali, the villagers protect Luttrell from the Taliban, risking their own lives in the process.
The Taliban repeatedly demand that the villagers surrender Luttrell, but the villagers stand firm. Luttrell’s dramatic rescue is ultimately orchestrated by U.S. forces after he is able to get a message out through one of the villagers.
The Aftermath
The book concludes with Luttrell mourning the loss of his teammates and reflecting on their courage and selflessness. He details the profound impact the mission had on him, both physically and emotionally, and honors the sacrifice of the men who gave their lives.
