Cybersecurity as an Afterthought

noun / the expensive realization that comes only after the breach
The near-universal practice of treating information security as a compliance checkbox or late-stage add-on rather than a foundational design requirement. Systems get built for convenience, speed, and user adoption first. Security is bolted on later — usually after something valuable has already leaked.
Current Exhibit (July 2026): Thailand Securities Depository (TSD) Investor Portal suffered unauthorized access. Partial user data was exposed. Officials rushed to assure the public that trading accounts, money, and actual assets remained untouched. The real damage is downstream: leaked personal information becomes fresh attack surface for phishing, social engineering, and credential-stuffing campaigns. One breach feeds the next.
The Deeper Irony: Even the plumbing of the stock market itself can be compromised. When critical market infrastructure treats cybersecurity as secondary, data leaks turn into force multipliers for other attackers. This resonates uncomfortably with the long-running stagnation of the SET index. Decades of relative underperformance are not solely about economics or politics — they also reflect deeper institutional habits: short-termism, weak governance culture, and the tendency to react to problems only after they become public.
In markets and in security, the pattern is the same. Surface-level activity continues. Real structural hardening is postponed. The bill eventually arrives — usually in the form of eroded trust, opportunistic attacks, and capital that quietly looks elsewhere.
Usage examples:
- “Another market infrastructure leak. Classic cybersecurity-as-an-afterthought energy.”
- “They said the money is safe. The data is not. That data is now someone else’s attack vector.”
- “SET has spent decades going sideways while basic information hygiene remains optional. The two problems are not unrelated.”
