Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI).  

• Artificial Intelligence (AI): This is the broader concept of creating intelligent agents, which are systems that can reason, learn, and act autonomously. AI encompasses a wide range of techniques and approaches, from rule-based systems to machine learning.  
• Machine Learning (ML): A subset of AI, ML focuses on developing algorithms that allow computers to learn from data without being explicitly programmed. It's about creating systems that can identify patterns, make predictions, and improve their performance over time.  

Think of it like this: Artificial intelligence is the grand vision of creating intelligent machines, while machine learning is a specific tool in the AI toolbox. It's one of the most powerful and widely used techniques for achieving AI, but it's not the only one.
