Big Pharma
The intent of this article is not about insensitivity towards big pharma. It's about ignorance.
But really who cares. Pharma companies are going to keep doing their thing and making bank off it and people are going to keep coming to the emerg or their family doctor or whoever, and keep getting the meds made by the Big Pharma they complain about. And the world will keep spinning.
It's right to be mad that major pharmaceutical corporations have so much power and influence, where the end goal is always profit, is a fair and justified stance. To say the we would be better without them, well that requires a little more nuance and thought. And the argument basically boils down to what people think is the major driving force for innovation - altruistically improving humankind or money and power. It's nice to think that people are inherently good, but it's also hard to provide historical evidence to the contrary.
Turning all medical research companies into government funded programs might work, it will allow people to have access to without worrying about money or cost. But do highly intelligent people decide a career in the field is no longer worth it, so we lose out on talented minds as they decide another private sector is the better option. don't know, no one really does, but they sure as hell think they do. It is entirely possible to not agree with Big Pharma's approach, while remaining sensitive to those that have been able to continue living, because these same companies developed treatments after years of hard work and research. Can you say the opposite is also true, then? Being for Big Pharma is insensitive to all those people who struggled for years, or lived in constant pain, or had to know that there were better medications available, but they couldn't afford it? It's not that simple. Try to tell someone that the system works, after they lose a loved one, because they lost their insurance, and simply could not afford their monthly prescription. On the flip side, would that some medication have existed if it wasn't a for profit organization. Yes, there are lots of very good and kind people who work in the industry that do work to improve lives. But they aren't doing it out the goodness of their heart, they are making pretty good money. And will have to disagree that if you asked people in these various departments, and admin roles, if they would take a major pay cut to stay working there, because it's all about morality. You think someone working in Supply Management will say, " rather work here here for 50% less money than doing the same job for another industry." think your expectation for people to see that things are not as cut and dry, while believing people will always choose the more noble career over pay is proving even those who try to remain open-minded may not be correct either.
